About the innovation team, what we do and our vision

The pace of innovation in aviation is relentless. Technology advances, large private and public investments, the rise of entrepreneurship, the explosion of new entrants in the aviation sector, and the adoption of agile innovation methodologies are all driving factors. But, the industry has strongly signalled its feeling that the regulator is not advancing at the same pace as it does, with new rulesets and standards that underpin regulatory approvals taking too long to emerge.

That is why in April 2019, the CAA launched its Innovation Hub.

We are creating a regulatory environment where innovation in aviation can flourish in line with CAA principles, setting the CAA and the industry on a common journey, by:

  • Making it easier for innovators to access CAA expertise, guidance, and viewpoints on regulations and providing a focal point of contact and information;
  • Helping innovators maximise regulatory readiness for the demonstration of their aviation systems by testing them in safe environments and learning how they address regulatory challenges; and
  • Accelerating the development of new policies and regulations by anticipating regulatory challenges in areas of innovation, then defining the requirements for new policies and regulations.

Our team combines years of experience, from advising start-ups and billion-pound global companies, through leading research projects on Artificial Intelligence for aerospace applications, to developing regulatory policies for future commercial operations. We have specialised expertise in most current areas of innovation, including Autonomous Systems, Artificial intelligence, Future Air Mobility and Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS).

Our vision is to make the UK a world leader for innovation in aviation

If you are an innovator working on the aviation solutions of tomorrow, we want you to get in touch with us at innovation@caa.co.uk

Please note that the CAA does not provide funding for innovation related projects.
